We will always love this collaboration. Kelly Clarkson and DoIIy Parton together sang “I Will Always Love You” on Dec. 21 when the country icon appeared on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” During the appearance, Parton, who wrote and recorded the original version of the song, spoke about the first time she heard Whitney Houston’s classic take on the hit that appeared in “The Bodyguard,” the 1992 movie that starred Houston and Kevin Costner.
Parton said the second song was originally chosen as the film’s theme song, but had to be scrapped when someone else recorded it. Parton said Costner had the idea to use “I’ll Always Love You” and gave her blessing to have it in the film, noting that she hadn’t heard of it again until she was driving in her car one day.
“I was just driving and I had the radio on and I just heard this…” she told Clarkson as she sang the opening part of the song.
Parton also said she had a hard time calming down when she heard Houston sing the chorus.
“When I got into ‘Me,’ I just went crɑzy,” she said. “I had to pull over because I honestly thought I was going to coIIapse.” It was the greatest feeling and you know how wonderful it was.”
Parton, who collaborated with Clarkson earlier this year on a new look for “9 to 5,” then singled out Clarkson for her cover of “I Will Always Love You” at the Academy of Country Music Awards in March.
“I wanted to tell you that the whole audience, Whitney, would be so proud of you because it looked like they were watching you. You absolutely naiIed it,” Patton said. “Seriously, it was amazing.”
Clarkson initially declined the request to sing with Parton, who said she would sing if Clarkson “sings in harmony with me.” That was good enough for Clarkson, who agreed.
The two superstars then showed off their class for a few moments, singing the title track. The experience overwheImed Clarkson.
“Your infIections in your voice are so magicaI. “You’re like a magicaI fairy man,” she told Parton.
